Understanding Segmented User Search
Segment User Search lets you limit member-facing user search results to users in the signed-in user’s assigned segment. You create segments using values from one metadata field, such as a Department, location, or other workforce group.
This setting controls who users can find in search. It does not control recognition eligibility or hide user profiles.
Setting Up User Search Segments
Before you begin, make sure you have the admin settings permission and know which metadata field you want to use for segmentation.
Follow these steps to configure user search segments:
- Go to Admin → Users → User Search Settings.
- Turn on Segment User Search.
- Under Metadata name, select the metadata field you want to use.
- Under Segment names, enter a segment name.
- Press Enter or select Create Segment.
- Repeat the previous two steps for each segment you want to create.
- In the Segment Assignment table, assign each metadata value to a segment using the Assign to segment dropdown.
- Select Save when the required values have been assigned.
On desktop, you can select multiple metadata values and assign them to a segment at the same time. On mobile, assign values one at a time.
NOTE: Changing the metadata field or deleting a segment clears related assignments, so you must assign those values again.
What Happens After You Save
When segmentation is enabled, a user’s member-facing search results show users in that user’s assigned segment. Users assigned to different segments are not included in those search results. For example, if you use a location metadata field and assign European cities to a segment named Europe, users in the Europe segment will see only users in that same segment when they search for users.
Important Limitations
Segment User Search does not:
- Affect user search in admin tools.
- Limit recognition program eligibility.
- Block profile views.
- Hide the company hierarchy.
The (None) row represents users who do not have a value for the selected metadata field.
FAQ
Can I hide one user from search?
- No individual hide option is described for this setting. Use metadata-based segments to control which users appear in member-facing search results.
What does (None) mean?
Does this setting affect admin user search?
Does this setting limit who can give or receive recognition?
What happens if I change the metadata field?
- Changing the metadata field clears the existing segment-to-value assignments. Your segment names remain, but you must assign the metadata values again.
